My favorite low-key Saturday hangout is nestled steps from the Grand River, just south of the hustle & bustle inside Grand Rapids’ city center. With a single-origin roast coffee in hand & WiFi linked, at a quiet table outside of the greenhouses on floor 2 of the gorgeous, ultra eco-friendly, Downtown Market, lies a view of clean architectural lines, bright lights, & a market abuzz with creativity, energy & crazy positive vibes – This place is Foodie Heaven on Foodie Earth.
The two floors of this building are filled with high-tech demo kitchens & instructional cooking classes for both adults & children. A fully functioning greenhouse. Multitude of restaurants serving all-natural, local products & the biggest burritos I’ve ever seen. Fresh seafood & fish monger. Cut2Order Butcher – just wait until you see the massive bone-in tomahawk ribeye steaks I’ll post later this month. Florist with the most beautiful floral arrangements. A Yoga Studio. Spice emporium. Chocolatier. Outdoor and Year-round indoor farmer’s market! Organic bakery. Cupcake & Ice Cream Shoppe. Old world pasta store. Oil/Vinegar press. Juice Bar. Beer Bar. Wine bar. Live Music.
This place is absolutely incredible.
Well, this afternoon was date day with my 2 little loves, Cam & Ava. The gameplan today was to join the herb gardening & cooking class (intended for families & kids of all ages)! Cam thought this would be fun (he loves tending his garden @ home!). We arrived more than an hour early, passing time by sampling fresh baked goods & more chocolate than you could shake a stick at, dancing to the live music, telling jokes from the inside of candy wrappers, engaging in a relatively competitive series of tic-tac-toe (Pictured above – shockingly, Ava has never lost a game. Ever.), being general goofballs, & devouring a bit of lunch (ie. Kettle Popcorn + Chocolate (my very favorite of which were these Turkish Figs stuffed with a chocolate-cayenne ganache, then double-dipped in dark chocolate!)).
I know. I know. I surely won’t be accepting any nominations for Dad of the Year feeding my kids Popcorn & Chocolate for lunch. But, hold judgement until the very moment you toss back a handful of Dorothy&Tony’s Popcorn and / or Grocer’s Daughter’s Chocolate.
A fantastic day at the market it was – great food, lots of laughs, & time with my 2 wild children. Now, onward to an evening at the movie theatre, then Sunday Funday with a few close friends, drinks, & enough food to nourish a moderately-sized community of sumo wrestlers & quarterback-tackling defensive linemen. Cheers.
