I couldn’t be more excited about volunteering for the local Little League again this year!
Each spring for the last 6 years my father & I have coached a baseball team together… One of my very favorite experiences – spending countless evenings & weekends at the ball fields with my old man, leading a group of 10-12yr olds on the rural sandlots of our small town community baseball facility.
That said, tonight was the official kick-off of Little League season, as our 2014 roster was announced.
Now. Once your team has been drafted & formed, the first of many responsibilities as a coach includes dialing the families of your roster – introducing yourself, providing insight to schedules & important dates, outlining expectations for parent involvement (and/or lack thereof), & ensuring the post-game barbeque potluck schedule is aligned!
But, above all, my very favorite part of the conversation is when I ask Mom/Dad to pass the phone onto their youngster.
If you’ve never mentored in a youth league, I can not remotely articulate the joy of giving your players a call for the very first time, welcoming them to the team & a new season. Absolutely nothing compares to the unadulterated elation in a 10yr old’s response when I say, “Good evening, (insert player name here). This is Coach Olson – Welcome to the big leagues, Son!” & that sound in their voice on the other end of the line is as if they’ve just signed a million dollar professional contract.
After 12 phone conversations & a few moment to reflect, I’ve realized these are the moments of a blessed life. Tonight was surely a fantastic evening.
Opening day in T-minus 29days!
